"Reverse Weeding" for Perfection

What in the World is "Weeding"?

If you’re new to Cricut, it’s a cutting machine that helps bring creative designs to life. And if you’re already familiar with it, you know all about weeding—the meticulous process of removing tiny bits of vinyl from your design so the final result looks just right. Tedious? Yes. Satisfying? Absolutely.

The Discovery

It happened by accident. My mom was helping me with a project, and instead of removing the outline of the text before applying the vinyl, she applied the vinyl first and then removed the excess. At first, I joked that she was doing it all wrong—but when I gave it a try, it turned out to be easier and produced a cleaner result. And if you’ve ever planned a wedding, you know how important it is for every little detail to feel seamless.

Part of the Planning Process

With reverse weeding in mind, I used this technique to my advantage when planning large-scale signs. The surrounding boxes didn’t just keep everything aligned—they also made it easier to measure spacing accurately. I mapped it all out in Figma, down to the inch.

Measuring, Taping, and Applying Vinyl

I use blue painter’s tape to create perfectly straight guides, marking out boxes so I know exactly where to place the vinyl. It helps ensure everything is aligned and looks polished once applied.

Sharing is Caring

I love sharing what I discover with others - so you can check out my TikToks where I provide instructions on how to achieve this!
